Paul Chain started his musical career with the horror metal band Death SS in 1977, combining blood-soaked metal and shock-rock theatrics. In 1979, he formed his own band called Paul Chain Violet Theatre (while he was still in Death SS). In 1983, Paul Chain left Death SS to concentrate on his solo band. The various Paul Chain incarnations released a large number of albums ranging from more traditional doom metal (often coming close to very early Black Sabbath) to more experimental music, and gained massive underground fame in doing so. »Alkahest« from 1995 is widely regarded as his most potent and gripping work. Amongst others, over the years Paul Chain has worked together with Lee Dorrian of Cathedral and Wino of Saint Vitus fame.

Containing the four songs “Occultism”, “Armageddon”, “Voyage To Hell” and “17 Day”, »Detaching From Satan« was originally issued in September 1984 by the Italian label Minotauro Records. It was Paul Chain's first solo release after leaving Death SS a year earlier.

The music on »Detaching From Satan« sounds very 70’s influenced, not unlike other doom acts at the time, such as Pentagram, Witchfinder General, Pagan Altar et al. However, Paul Chain Violet Theatre has much more of a psychedelic vibe to it and there are various interludes containing chants and keyboards for eerie effect. The vocals are especially stunning, sounding quite melodic without missing the eccentric quality of many Italian hard rock and metal protagonists from the 1970s and 1980s.
