Paul Chain started his musical career with the horror metal band Death SS in 1977, combining blood-soaked metal and shock-rock theatrics. In 1979, he formed his own band called Paul Chain Violet Theatre (while he was still in Death SS). In 1983, Paul Chain left Death SS to concentrate on his solo band. The various Paul Chain incarnations released a large number of albums ranging from more traditional doom metal (often coming close to very early Black Sabbath) to more experimental music, and gained massive underground fame in doing so. »Alkahest« from 1995 is widely regarded as his most potent and gripping work. Amongst others, over the years Paul Chain has worked together with Lee Dorrian of Cathedral and Wino of Saint Vitus fame. Containing four songs, »Detaching From Satan« from 1984 was Paul Chain's first solo release after having left Death SS a year earlier. Three years later, also on the Italian Minotauro label, »Highway To Hell« was originally released, featuring the four songs “Highway To Hell”, “Never Cry”, “The Evil, The Sorrow” and “Way To Pain”. Despite the album title paying tribute to AC/DC, on »Highway To Hell« Paul Chain continued his search for new ways to combine occult imagery with challenging doom metal. In the process Paul Violet Theatre is creating a haunting vibe dominated by pure psychedelic weirdness. Not for the weak-hearted. Matthias Mader
