Flotsam & Jetsam might just be a footnote of heavy metal history today, being only remembered for the fact that their bass player Jason Newsted went on to seek fame and fortune with a little band called Metallica. Fate was not kind to them but there was indeed a time when it looked as if Kelly David Smith (drums), Eric A.K. (vocals), Jason Newsted (bass), Michael Gilbert (guitar) and Edward Carlson (guitar) were destined for big things.

The roots of Flotsam & Jetsam go back to the year 1980, when Jason Newsted and Kelly David Smith formed the band in Phoenix, Arizona. However, their first demo entitled “Metalshock” took all of five years to see the light of day. After “I live you die” appeared on “Metal Massacre VII”, Brian Slagel signed Flotsam & Jetsam for Metal Blade Records.

Their debut album “Doomsday for the Deceiver” was released in 1986 and must rate as one of the Top 20 US Metal records of all time. Songs like “Hammerhead”, the headbanging “Iron Tears”, the complex title cut or “Der Fuhrer” put Flotsam & Jetsam on the map for good.

“Doomsday for the Deceiver” earned fantastic reviews all over the world (especially in mainland Europe and the UK) resulting in a tour along with Megadeth in the Northeast of the US and Europe.

“No Place for Disgrace” (1988) and “When the Storm comes down” (1990) were good follow up albums but with “Quatro” (1992), “Drift” (1995), “High” (1997) and “Unnatural Selection” (1999) the band's fanbase eroded more and more.

Flotsam & Jetsam's eighth studio album “My God” was originally released on Metal Blade Records in 2001. Up until now it was never released on vinyl. The album features songs like “Killing Time”, “Nothing to say” and “Keep breathing” and must rate as an overlooked gem in the work of the band (although not quite on par with the classic first three albums). Shortly after the release of the album, singer Eric A.K. temporarily left Flotsam & Jetsam to be replaced by James Rivera.
