THE ‘TRAITORS GATE’ BAND LINE UP BEGAN LIFE IN 1979 AS ‘CYRON’, PLAYING ORIGINAL AND COVER MATERIAL. THE LINE UP WAS… HUGH JONES…BASS AND VOCALS PAUL HOUSE… DRUMS ALEX LOHFINK…GUITARS TONY COOK…GUITARS. SOME RECORDED MATERIAL EXISTS FROM THIS BAND IN THE FORM OF A LIVE CONCERT RECORDED AT ‘BAILEYS CLUB’ CAERLEON. AFTER SEVERAL FAILED ATTEMPTS AT GETTING A RECORD CONTRACT ALEX LEFT TO SPEND A SHORT STINT WITH ‘PERSIAN RISK’, MOST FAMOUS FOR SPAWNING PHIL CAMPBELL OF ‘MOTORHEAD’ FAME. ANDY TURNER WAS AT THE TIME PERFORMING WITH AN ORIGINAL BAND WITH HIS BROTHER STUART ON BASS AND ANDREW DAVIES ON DRUMS, THE NAME OF WHICH ESCAPES ME. AFTER A FEW MONTHS PESTERING HIM TO JOIN WITH PAUL AND MYSELF WE FORMED ‘QUEST’, AGAIN A MIX OF ORIGINAL AND COVERS MUSIC. THE LINE UP WAS COMPLETED WITH STEVE COLLEY ON GUITAR TO BOOST THE LIVE SOUND WHEN ANDY WAS SOLOING. AFTER ACTIVELY GIGGING FOR SEVERAL MONTHS IT WAS SUGGESTED THAT I CONCENTRATE ON VOCALS AND SO MARK JONES JOINED US ON BASS FOR A WHILE. THE WRITING WAS GETTING CLUTTERED WITH SO MANY IDEAS THAT DURING THIS PERIOD LITTLE IF ANYTHING WAS RECORDED AND SO WE REVERTED BACK TO A FOUR PIECE WITH STEVE TAKING OVER THE BASS DUTIES. ‘TRAITORS GATE’ WAS BORN OUT OF THIS CHANGE AND THE RECORD DEAL WITH ‘BULLET RECORDS’ WAS SIGNED MORE OUT OF DESPERATION THAN CAREFUL THOUGHT. THE ORIGINAL DEMO RECORDING WAS PRESSED AS THE SINGLE WHEN IT WOULD HAVE BEEN BETTERED BY BEING RERECORDED BUT ‘BULLET’ WENT INTO ADMINISTRATION WITHIN MONTHS OF IT BEING RELEASED. WITH LITTLE ON THE HORIZON ANDY TURNER LEFT TO JOIN MARK JONES AND FORM ‘MONRO’. THEY STRUCK OUT FOR THE USA AND UNFORTUNATELY ALL IT ACHIEVED WAS ONE ALBUM. ‘TRAITORS GATE’ BROUGHT IN FIRST CHRIS ELLIS AND THEN ANDY D’URSO ON GUITAR BUT THIS DID LITTLE TO LIFT THINGS AND I LEFT THE BAND SHORTLY AFTERWARDS TO BE REPLACED BY DAVE MCLEAN. THE BAND CONTINUED FOR A WHILE PLAYING THE CIRCUIT BUT DISBANDED IN 1985. |
