Nocturnal from the Rhineland-Palatinate give you the finest old school black/thrash. High Roller Records give you their debut, now finally back on vinyl. First released in 2005 “Arrival of the Carnivore” was aptly described as a „fun record if you are stuck in the 80's, but nothing new.“ Well, that's exactly what we want from Nocturnal – riff-based old school thrash in the veins of old heros like Destruction, Sodom, Kreator, Exumer... In 2014 Nocturnal released their third full-length album “Storming Evil” via High Roller, and if you walk this world with your eyes open you simply must have noticed them: They lately played at important festivals like Rock Hard Festival and PartySan, and the official video for “Rising Demons” has just reached over 50,000 views. Nocturnal were formed in 2000, but it took them quite a long while to record and release their first full length album. How come? Guitarrist Daniel explains: “I started out Nocturnal on my own after my former band Bestial Desecration had split up. Musically Bestial Desecration had followed the same path as what I did with Nocturnal from then on. It was in 2002 when we got the first real, stable line up with Mayhem and Hellbastard. Vomitor came in the band together with Jex on the 2nd guitar in 2003 ... from then on we also played live gigs.” Yet even though the lack of a stable line up made it hard to get the first full-length release done, the band released a wealth of splits, EPs and even a live album, before in 2003 they seriously started working on “Arrival of the Carnivore”: “We recorded 'Arrival of the Carnivore' during the summer of 2004, so it took us a year or so to rehearse the songs I wrote until we could record them.” According to Daniel, it then took a while until Nocturnal got the reactions they deserved: “It was only in 2007/2008 when I noticed that some people actually are into the album very much.” How come? “Arrival of the Carnivore” was first released on From Beyond Prod., a sub-label of Displeased Records. This seemingly wasn't really the best option for Nocturnal, as Daniel explains: “From Beyond Pro., was handled by a guy called Roman, who was more into underground metal than the rest of the staff.” Today, ten years later, Daniel is still very satisfied with how their first album had turned out, even though there are some things he would rather change: “I still like the songs very much... and the cover artwork, too. The production and some other things I would do differently now...” What is it exactly he does not like? “The drums sound strange... some songs even sound like they were recorded in different sessions and the guitars were recorded with a fucked up guitar amp.... I did not even know it was broken until I sold it and the guy who bought it went crazy...” Again, isn't that what we want? “Arrival of the Carnivore” is not “perfect”, but it is a diamond in the rough: True old school thrash with the right attitude! The re-release on High Roller comes with no frills: It will contain the album with all the great songs ¬– and the DIY-Spirit you only get from people who play thrash metal with a truly UNHOLY spirit.
