In 2010 Candlemass main man Leif Edling along with singer Robert Lowe, guitarists Lars "Lasse" Johansson and Mats "Mappe" Björkman along with drummer Jan Lindh decided to record two cover versions – “Don’t Fear The Reaper” by Blue Öyster Cult and “All Along The Watchtower” originally written by Bob Dylan (but more commonly associated with Jimi Hendrix). The resulting limited edition 12” single on High Roller Records (initially 250 copies on green vinyl and 100 on black) became an instant collector’s item (with punters paying between 50 and 100 Euros for a copy). Candlemass fans will now be delighted to be able to add the new 10” edition of “Don’t Fear The Reaper”/“All Along The Watchtower” to their record collection as well.
"We all love those songs, 'Don't Fear The Reaper' in particular,” explained Leif Edling when the single was originally released eleven years ago. “It was Robert's idea about that one, and he does a great job on it. Me and Mappe love the first four Blue Öyster Cult albums. Personally, I think their third release »Secret Treaties« is a masterpiece. In those days Blue Öyster Cult sold millions of albums. Maybe these days they are a bit forgotten when I think about it. Not on the Classic Rock radio channel though, they play the hell out of them. The main thing with this 12” single is to have something cool available for the fans. My friend Pål Olofsson has made an amazing cover for it, very 70's!"
Of course, “Don't Fear The Reaper” and “All Along The Watchtower” are not the only cover songs Candlemass have played during their long and fruitful career. The bassist explains: "We've played plenty of covers live, like 'Over The Mountain', 'Gypsy', 'Not Fragile' etc … but only recorded our Black Sabbath medley, Nazareth's 'Not Faking It', and these two on the new vinyl. And for the record: the Nazareth song was only mixed down on a cassette that disappeared almost immediately."
Leif is a big vinyl collector himself, but unfortunately had to sell a good part of his collection some years ago when he was “desperately in need for cash”. He explains: “It still hurts when I think about it. Sold my great Judas Priest collection, the Motörhead vinyls, the Venom stuff, Mercyful Fate, King Diamond etc. The only stuff I got left is my pretty extensive Black Sabbath collection, and the Rush stuff. But I'm planning to sell Rush as well to afford more Sabbath vinyl.”
